Plane curves in boxes and equal sums of two powers
Let F ∈ Z[x1, x2, x3] be an absolutely irreducible form of degree d, producing a plane curve in P. The central aim of this paper is to analyze the density of rational points on such curves, which are contained in boxes with unequal sides. We shall see below how such considerations may be used to obtain new paucity results for equal sums of two powers. Suppose that P = (P1, P2, P3) for fixed rea...
متن کاملCLOSURE OF THE CONE OF SUMS OF 2d-POWERS IN CERTAIN WEIGHTED `1-SEMINORM TOPOLOGIES
In [3] Berg, Christensen and Ressel prove that the closure of the cone of sums of squares ∑R[X]2 in the polynomial ring R[X] := R[X1, . . . , Xn] in the topology induced by the `1-norm is equal to Pos([−1, 1]n), the cone consisting of all polynomials which are non-negative on the hypercube [−1, 1]n. The result is deduced as a corollary of a general result, also established in [3], which is vali...
متن کاملA New Proof of the Prouhet-tarry-escott Problem
The famous Prouhet-Tarry-Escott problem seeks collections of mutually disjoint sets of non-negative integers that have equal sums of like powers. In this paper we present a new proof of the solution to this problem by deriving a generalization of the product generating function formula for the classical Prouhet-Thue-Morse sequence.
متن کاملOn Sums of Powers of Almost Equal Primes
We investigate the Waring-Goldbach problem of representing a positive integer n as the sum of s kth powers of almost equal prime numbers. Define sk = 2k(k − 1) when k > 3, and put s2 = 6. In addition, put θ2 = 19 24 , θ3 = 4 5 and θk = 5 6 (k > 4). Suppose that n satisfies the necessary congruence conditions, and put X = (n/s). We show that whenever s > sk and ε > 0, and n is sufficiently large...
متن کاملSolving Diophantine Equations on a Network of Workstations
In 1769, Euler, by generalising Fermat's Last Theorem, conjectured that "it is impossible to exhibit three fourth powers whose sum is a fourth power", "four fifth powers whose sum is a fifth power, and similarly for higher powers". The first counterexample to the conjecture, was found in 1966 after a systematic computer search: 275 +845 + 1105 + 1335 = 1445. More recently, Euler's conjecture wa...
